Written to a family member, regarding his final illness, a cancer which was kept secret as the disease was stigmatized at the time. In part: "...I have been quite ill since Christmas Day and was not really well for some time before that...I am solemnly advised that nothing but great care can give me hope of recovery and good health. All this has been kept from the public as much as possible and I hope this will continue...but I think you should know..."
