Autographed letter signed on "Senate Chamber" letterhead, 1 page, 8vo, 8 x 5 inches, accompanied by a handwritten envelope, 3.25 x 5.5 inches, with the printed return address "Senate Chamber." In part: " I wish sincerely it was in my power to render...some really practical service. I sent letters commending them to the newly appointed Democratic office holders in New Orleans but I fear these letters may lead to disappointment. These Southerners are hampered by the Civil Service rules..." Washington, D.C., July 15, 1883. The letter has vertical and horizontal folds and pale ink, but is still in very good condition.
