Author was private secretary to Count Ruis de Castilla, President and Captain-General of Quito. Stevenson joined the 1810 revolution and was named Governor of Esmeraldas. Later he became secretary to Lord Cochrane, vice-admiral of Chile. "His book is of great value for the period immediately preceding the South American Revolution.
