2 pages, 9.75 x 7.75 inches, Washington, January 26, 1881. Written to the managing editor of the Washington Post. Marked "Personal" and opening with a lengthy quote from the Constitution on the succession of power in the event of a President's death, he then offers his opinion that if President-Elect Garfield die before taking office, his Vice President-Elect would be sworn in instead. (Six months later, Garfield died in office.) Small tears along one of the folds; still very good condition.
Influential Congressman from Pennsylvania; Speaker of the House.
