Description: ix, 37 pages. 8vo, modern wrappers. Philadelphia, 1838.

Comments: First Edition. A rare and valuable copy of this protest by the eminent naval surgeon. Packard (ii, p. 697) states that Barton was merely opposed to the "title, Surgeon General," but the pamphlet makes it clear that he was opposed to the office as well. The DAB states that Barton was apparently opposed to the creation of this new position because he was "jealous of the new office."
