Comments: It embodies a full presentation of the subject of "animal heat" from the physiological, physical and chemical viewpoints, and what is most important it is developed in its full historical context. Dastre (1844-1917), who had worked as an assistant in the laboratories of Claude Bernard and Paul Bert, was a professor of physiology at the Sorbonne. Especially devoted to experimental physiology, he contributed to the study of anesthesia, liver function and the physiology of the nervous system.
