Bernstein (1747-1835) began his career as a barber, later becoming a pupil of Hufeland and Loder in Jena, and finally professor of surgery in the university of Berlin, where his specialty was lecturing on bandages, fractures and dislocations. This text book describes in detail all the various materials used in bandaging and the different methods of bandaging various parts of the body, and includes mention of such instruments and prostheses as breast-pumps, orthopedic corsets, trusses, pessaries, glass eyes, artificial limbs, etc. An appendix was published in 1802 with illustrations for this work.
