Description: 2-page letter (apparently penned by a secretary), written front and back on a lined piece of paper measuring 8 x 5 inches, Washington, D.C., January 8, 1878. Signed "JA Garfield" to the secretary of the Executive Board of Mechanical Engineers in Cleveland, agreeing to submit the recipient's recent letter to a Senate committee. In part: "Yours of the 3rd inst. is received and its contents have been noted. Your letter states so fully the opinion of your Society that I will take the liberty to hand it to the Senate Committee having in charge the subject matter to which it relates. This I think will aid you." Accompanied by a the original post-marked envelope, which is stained and dust-soiled. The letter has a small tear along one of the folds and is in very good(-) condition.Signed: Y
