Description: 2 pages (front and back), 9.75 x 7.75 inches, Troy, New York, September 22, 1863. Unusual war-date letter written as major general to a lawyer on behalf of a draftee who was seeking exemption from military service, in part: "The bearer Mr. Ash informs me that he has been drafted. I am well acquainted with him his circumstances and family. He has a small firm encumbered with a wife, child and a widowed mother, all of whom are depending on him for their support and maintenance...If Ash should be taken away, neither the mother wife & child could support themselves..." Small tear along one of the folds; very good condition.

Comments: American army officer; served in the War of 1812, the Mexican War, and the Civil War; sent reinforcements in time to save Fortress Monroe for the Union (1861).
