Du Pont" to Commodore Shubrick, regarding the death of a mutual friend, in part: "I was so busy yesterday, going...on shore on duty, that I had not time to come & see how you were. I regret missing you this morning but will endeavor to call again this evening. I dine on shore. I recd. yesterday a letter from Mrs. D.P. of 6th April and I regret to inform you that Mrs. Hayward has met with great affliction in the loss of her daughter Mrs. Bradford..."
