Description: Editio Tertia; Auctior, Correctior, & Distinctior. Engr. port. 300pp. + index. 4to, modern 3/4 red levant, t.e.g.; several pp. slightly waterstained. Hagae-Comitum, Ex Typographia Adriani Vlacq, 1655.

Comments: A "widely read and influential" biography of the French cleric, savant, lawyer and conseiller of the Parlement of Provence. "Through this book Peiresc and his work came to be known to many who had neither visited his collections and library ... nor exchanged letters with him" (DSB). In addition to sponsoring the scientific researches of others, Peiresc is noteworthy for his own investigations into natural phenomena, particularly in the astronomical realm. He was an avid collector of books, manuscripts and animals, with his gardens being in their day the third largest in France. He is also known for such diverse exploits as introducing the Angora cat into Europe and going on record in defense of Galileo. His ideas, though unsystematic in themselves, are said to have exerted considerable influence on the speculations of his more famous biographer, the great scientist, mathematician and scholar, in whose arms Peiresc died in 1637. Pierre Bayle said of him: "Jamais homme ne rendid plus de services a la Republique des Lettres..." (DSB). An excellent copy with the William Salloch bookplate. DSB X, 488-92; Brunet Tab. 30592.
