This is a more popular presentation of subjects dealt with in Tyndall's classical work, The glaciers of the Alps, (1860), in which, through the direct application of the doctrine of regelation he had arrived at a satisfactory explanation of the nature of glacier motion. In the introduction Tyndall gives an eye-witness account of a "breaking out" of the Margelin See on the Aletsch Glacier.
