This beautiful celestial map issued by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge or SDUK features the constellations of Crux, Lupus, Centaurus, Phoenix, and others circumjacent to the South Pole. The map uses the Gnomonic Projection and includes stars up to the sixth magnitude, of those that can be seen with the naked eye.
Originally published by Baldwin and Cradock in October 1830, drawn by W. Newton. Constellations were drawn by W. Clarke and engraved by J. & C. Walker. Chips to right margin with minor foxing and edge wear.
The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge was formed in 1826 and published low cost maps with the goal of reaching a large market, while still maintaining high quality and precision.
