The author and her husband were Mormon missionaries in Europe who emigrated to Salt Lake City in 1855. In 1870, Fanny and Thomas Stenhouse became followers of William S. Godbe, a critic of Brigham Young. The Stenhouses were against polygamy and were excommunicated from the LDS Church.
