Signed Original Cartoon Drawing of Happy Hooligan

1934.

This 3 x 5.25-inch drawing was done from memory within days of his retirement at the age of 77 and almost completely blind. His iconic character is pictured here with a suit, tie, and tin-can hat; executed in graphite pencil and ink, boldly signed "Frederick Burr Opper, January 11, 1934." Small insignificant chip at the top right corner, but otherwise in near fine condition.

Regarded as one of the pioneers of American newspaper comic strips, best known for his character Happy Hooligan, which he drew from 1900 until his retirement in 1934 due to blindness.
