Autographed Letter Signed "F.J. Porter"
Place Published: New York
Date Published: 1885
Description: 2 pages, 8 x 5 inches, New York City, January 23, no year, circa 1885. Written to an unknown recipient pertaining to his Court Martial appeal, in part: "...I propose sending 2 drafts giving locations...to the accompanying data - with a letter asking him to have published the maps, or so much as is necessary to 'indicate the truth of history.' I thought it best to give the data with comments...letting others draw their conclusions - except I shall state in a letter to the Sec. of War, that I quote contradictory evidence from the same persons. You know the letter accusing McDonald of being errant of integrity - these extracts sustain in part any accusation - and I think if it gets out, as it will, he will be compelled to meet the points..." Expertly mounted to a 9 x 6-inch sheet of paper. Near fine condition.
Comments: Union General during the Civil War who was subsequently tried before a Court Martial and removed from the service. It took 25 years for him to restore his tarnished reputation.Signed: Y
