Description: Map. Engraving with hand outline color. Image measures 18.75 x 23.25".

Comments: This beautiful map of European Russia or the western part of the Russian Empire covers from Poland and the Baltic eastward to Ilimskoy, Siberia. Includes an early mapping of Nouvelle Zemble or Novaya Zemlya. Labels provinces, towns, and topography rendered in profile. An elegantly engraved title cartouche features polar bears and three wind heads. The map is in very good condition with minor toning along the centerfold and minimal foxing. Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688-1766) was an important French mapmaker during the 18th century. His "Atlas Universel" was one of the most significant atlases of the period, integrating older sources with more modern surveyed maps in order to convey correct geographical and political information. This map of European Russia demonstrates his commitment to detail.

You've got yourself one happy customer at this end, folks. I've been looking for another copy of "West of the Indus" for nearly twenty years (I know, it's such a cultural wasteland out here in the provinces), and I never expected to find one with a dust jacket. I am amazed. Thank you so much. I've enjoyed many books over the years, but this one has always been one of my favorites. Now if I can just figure out how to share it with my friends without losing it... - Paul B.
