Description: Edited and published in Mexico by Genaro Garcia. Translated into English, with Introduction and Notes by Alfred Percival Maudslay. Illustrated with 30 plates, 3 folding panoramas, and 15 folding maps on 20 folding sheets. 5 volumes. 8vo, original blue cloth with gilt lettering on spines. London: Hakluyt Society, 1908-1916.

Comments: The usual browning to the endpapers and adjacent leaves in all volumes, the explanatory booklet in the map volume has several creases to the front wrapper, otherwise a magnificent set. This work represents the first English translation form Diaz del Castillo's original manuscript. The book was first published in 1632 by Friar Alonzo Remon, but Remon seriously corrupted the text, suppressing whole pages of the manuscript, interpolating others, garbling the facts, changing the names of people and places, etc. Genaro Garcia undertook for the first time to produce an exact transcription of the manuscript, with erasures and blotted passages explained in footnotes; it is this transcription that Maudsley used for his English translation. The third volume is comprised of 8 maps on 12 sheets accompanied by an explanatory booklet. The final volume also includes the text of Cortes' Fifth Letter; volume one includes a bibliography of Mexico. Diaz del Castillo's narrative is an account of Hernando Cortes' conquest of Mexico City and the Aztec Empire in 1519-21, written by one of his soldiers. This is the most authoritative and best-illustrated English version, and because of its publication history is quite scarce. Cox II, p. 242. Hakluyt Society, Second Series, Volumes XXIII, XXIV, XXV, XXX, and XL.
