Description: 1 page, 8.25 x 6 inches, removed from an 1851 Yale yearbook. Written to fellow classmate, staunch unionist, and future judge Marcus Lyon -- a long salutation ending with the lines: "And now my hearty true friend Lyon - This rough old world we'll soon to try - Let's not its cause with stem good will - And make it fit us easy still. Your friend and Classmate Geo. S. Tuckerman." Faint browning at the edges, but still in near fine condition.

Comments: An infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Hiram C. Berdan of New York created the elite Sharpshooter Regiment in 1861. During their service, they fought in every Eastern battle up until autumn of 1864, including distinction at Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Atlanta, and Petersburg. Their uniforms were green, rather than the standard blue, and they were not allowed to have brass on any of their buttons. They were considered high-priority kills amongst the Confederate army because they had such high skills and excellent salvageable equipment. George S. Tuckerman, a graduate from Yale in 1851, was one of the very first officers selected into the elite marksman group encompassing the Sharpshooters. He commanded Company D and saw action in every major engagement throughout the war.
