Description: 2 pages (front and back), 9.5 x 6.25 inches, Morris County, New Jersey, March 18, 1896. Written to Melville E. Stone, founder of the Chicago Daily News, responding to a request for a contribution to the Eugene Field Monument fund, in part: "...I will be very glad to make a drawing for the book, but I hope you will send me a subject that does not deal with children. I am not at all successful with children and avoid drawing them whenever I can: But of course I will do anything you send me and do my best..." Staple holes near the top margin; uneven toning at the top and left edges. Very good(-) condition.

Comments: American artist and cartoonist who illustrated, among other books, a number of works by Joel Chandler Harris and Lewis Carroll.
