Description: Exceptional unpublished signed poem, titled "My Thirty Second Birthday," 1 page, 8.5 x 4.75 inches, four stanzas. Written on the back of a restaurant check made out to Fields for $3.00 at the Hotel Brunswick in Denver, Colorado, on August 31, 1882. This humorous poem was created on the spot for his friend Corporal Raymond, who accompanied Field to the restaurant in celebration of his 32nd birthday -- and then picked up the check for $3.00, in small part, consisting of the 2nd and 4th verses: "The gallant Corporal Raymond said 'Who dares to send an order here?' Yet by the living and the dead - And by the hairs of this proud head, if it be Field - there's difference there! So Corporal Raymond paid the bill - Three dollars! Blush O muse, to say - Three dollars for the juice of still - And meats he took to make his fill - So fritter man their gold away!" Accompanied by an original cabinet photograph taken on that memorable day by Charles Bohm, depicting Eugene Field, Corporal Raymond, and two unidentified people posed in a studio setting, possibly unique. The poem has three horizontal folds, several small smudges, and a light strip of uneven toning on the right edge. Very good condition.

Comments: American writer best known for his children's poetry and humorous essays.

Thank you for your kind response. As it turns out, I was able to visit the Argosy on Tuesday. In fact, I arrived shortly after opening and stayed most of the morning, making a number of purchases. I notice that you wrote to me a 10:34 AM, meaning that I was in the store when you sent me an email. One of life's many coincidences... Again, many thanks for your courteous response. Best regards, until my next visit! - Phillip R.
