Heyns requesting he sign a Michigan nominating petition so he can stand for re-election, in part: "...Once again the time has come for circulating nominating petitions so that I may qualify for the Michigan Primary Election to be held on August 4th. In this connection I am appealing to you for assistance. As the Congressman from the Fifth District and as Minority Leader since 1965, I have attempted to serve Kent and Iona Counties conscientiously and constructively. Now I need your help, and trust that my record is one which you can support..." The future President then proceeds to explain the correct procedure on how to prepare a petition and what criteria must be met to guarantee the signatures will be honored.
