Description: 1 page, 11 x 8.5 inches, City of New York, Office of the Mayor, August 8, 1988. Written to acclaimed photographer and gay rights advocate Lee Snider, in full: "Thank you for your supportive words regarding the historical photographic exhibition "Prejudice & Pride The NYC Lesbian & Gay Community: World War II -- Present." I am proud that our office coordinated the project and that its public reception has been so overwhelmingly positive. With the addition these past few weeks of 42 commemorative quilts from the Names Project, the exhibition continues to provide a moving commentary on issues affecting the gay and lesbian community and our city as a whole. Naturally I was distressed that the opening and the Gay and Lesbian Pride and History Month proclamation ceremony were so disrupted as to destroy the prepared program. Many, besides myself, had planned to speak or perform and most of the hundreds present were there to celebrate the entire occasion. While we all respect a group's right to disagree and speak out, we likewise know the insidious dangers of silencing others. To an extent, social silencing and its consequences were what the exhibition was all about." Two horizontal folds and a slight smear in the first name of his signature -- otherwise fine condition.
