Comments: This map of North America is one of the first such maps published in the United States. With the exception of the far West, the map is remarkably detailed, with cities, rivers, bays, and mountains. A dark outline surrounds the coasts, giving the map an overall graphic quality that points to the advanced quality of its cartography and design. An unusual key on the left side of the map identifies the 15 American states by roman numeral. The map appeared in Reid's "The American Atlas," which was an accompaniment to William Winterbotham's "An Historical, Geographical, Commercial and Philosophical View of the United States." The map is in good condition with some foxing along the center seam. Minor tears in margins not affecting the image. John Reid was a publisher based in New York City, whose seminal work was the second atlas engraved and published in the United States. For the complete atlas, also available at Argosy, see SKU #210076. This map is a fine early American map of North America.
