Description: 1 page, 1.5 x 7 inches, Taunton, July 12, 1766. Rare promissory note with full signature within the text, written by the member of the Continental Congress, signer of the Declaration of Independence, and first Attorney General of Massachusetts. This document promises to repay Paine the "three pounds, seventeen shillings & eight pence" which he is loaning to the recipient, in part: "For value received, I promise to pay Robert Treat Paine..." The recipient's signature is on the front with additional names and amounts on the back. Near fine condition.
