Description: Sea Chart. Uncolored engraving. Page measures 18.75" x 40".

Comments: This dramatic large scale map of the Avalon Peninsula in SE Newfoundland was part of a later edition of the fourth book, "The West-India Navigation", published by W. & J. Mount & T. Page in 1784. Beautiful rendering of bays and inlets, rocks, soundings, some anchorages, coastal islands, place-names and three big compass roses with north oriented towards the right. Also shown is a large inset of Chebucto Harbour (aka Jipugtug named by the Mi'kmaq Indians) with an early plan of Halifax. The two other creatively placed harbour details include Trinity Harbour (which is north of Avalon) and St. John's Harbour (which is the Capital of Newfoundland and one of the oldest city in North Americas). Deep folds and creases as issued, needs to be flattened, some browning along lower edges. Dark rich engraving. Manuscript notes on verso. Mount and Page are best known for being publishers of charts and pilot books. The "English Pilot" was the first English Atlas to chart American waters. It was published in many editions from 1671 to 1803.
