Comments: Eggert Olafsen (1726 - 1768), was member of the Danish Academy of Sciences. In 1752, went on a mission to Iceland in order to gather information on the scientific, economic and political nature of the island. "Atlas du Voyage en Islande, fair par ordre de S.M. Danoise" was a later French edition of this voyage and consists of many fine engravings depicting Iceland's distinctive landscape, people, geology, birdlife and fish and this large scale map. Erichsen and Schoemming's map shows district divisions and includes glaciers, topography, towns, lakes.

Thanks for the note. I'm actually in NY for a few days and was hoping to get there but have to head back tomorrow. I've been stopping by the Argosy for over 60 years starting when my mother would take me there after shopping at Bloomingdale's and lunch at a long gone restaurant on the east side of Lexington between 58th and 59th that was torn down to make way for Alexander's department store; that is gone too, of course. - Peter H.
