Description: 1 page on "State of Ohio Executive Department" letterhead with an ink-engraved illustration in the upper left corner, 9.5 x 7.5 inches, Columbus, March 5, 1869. Signed "RB Hayes" by the then-Governor of Ohio asking newly inaugurated President Ulysses S. Grant to make an appointment the day after Grant took office, in large part: "William C. Bunts Esq. of Cleveland Ohio has been recommended by a large number of the members of the Bar of Cleveland and others for the Office of District Attorney of the Northern District of Ohio...[I] endorse his qualifications in strong terms...He served on the staff of Gen. Rosecrans...and as a line officer in the 125th Ohio Infantry..." Natural folds, small chip on the right edge expertly repaired, and tape remnants on the back; still a beautiful item in very good condition.
