Written during the height of World War 1 and signed "Noel" to Kathleen Barber, informing her of the death of one of their mutual friends who was involved in the War, in part: "...I am so awfully sorry but I cannot possibly come to tea tomorrow as I shall got to go to Richenshal. I have been very sad lately because dear old John died two weeks ago at Faruler's where he was training for the flying corp. He caught spotted fever and died in just days! It has been a frightful shock...as he was the greatest pal. I know you will be sorry too, he was such fun and so full of life and we were always together..."
