Description: Map. Copper plate engraving with original color. Image measures 8.5" x 11.25".

Comments: This map of the central portion of Mexico dates from the colonial period of Mexican history. It extends from Durango and Tamaclipa in the north to Mexaltepec and the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in the south. Mexico City is marked near the center of the map in proximity to a large lake, outlined in blue. Pictorial mountains fill the spaces between the country's rivers. The map was published in Bellin's "Hydrographique Français," made to accompany L'Abbe Prevost's "Atlas de l'Histoire generale des Voyage." Aging around edges, small tears to right and bottom edges. Scattered foxing and minor discoloration along centerfold. Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772) was the official hydrographer to the French king and the first person to hold the title of "Ingénieur de la Marine of the Depot des cartes et plans de la Marine" (chief engineer of the French Hydrographical Office). He was particularly well known for his maps of the French Empire, especially the territories in North America. This map is a fine example of his detailed work.
