Description: Fine archive of three autographed letters signed "Rory" by the botanical artist to a New York City gallery owner. The first letter, three pages (front and back) on blue airmail paper, describes McEwen's problems with an art dealer. The second, a friendly one-page letter, thanks a friend for an announcement. The third letter, two pages on personal stationery, describes the effects of radiotherapy, and includes an invitation to dinner from Prince and Princess Michael of Greece. Each letter comes with the original postmarked envelope. Archive includes a program and an announcement from McEwen's 1982 Staempfli exhibition in New York and several related typed and autographed letters written to the gallery owner. First letter: 8.5 x 6.5 inches, London, May 14, 1982. Second letter: 7 x 5.5 inches, London, October 3, 1982. Third Letter: 7 x 5.5 inches, London, September 30, 1982 (written 16 days before he died). Paperclip stain on the upper left corner of the first letter; otherwise all three in near fine condition.

Comments: From the first letter: "...I asked her what had become of the paintings of mine that Klaus had sold, and about 10 days later a note arrived from New York telling me where they were, which made me respect her efficiency...But I hate her concept of Art-as-a-Marketing-Exercise...If you stop and think of where that leads, philosophically... it pushes chicken farming into the higher realms of man's achievements!..."
