Description: Important autographed letter signed "Ludwig." 1 page, 10 x 8 inches, personal letterhead, no place, January 28, 1961, written to Ervine (Metzl) -- Bemelmans friend, agent, and "ghost illustrator" -- to close the deal whereby Metzl would end up illustrating "Madeline in London." In part: "To Clarify things - for the Madeline book I will pay $800 for your services which please take by collecting 2 full payments from the Chicago Acct. Also let me know for tax purposes what I paid you for your work during 1960." Light creasing along the right edge plus usual folds; very good condition.

Comments: Bemelmans was an Austria-Hungary-born American writer and illustrator best remembered for his series of "Madeline" picture books. Metzl was an acclaimed artist best known for his poster and postage stamp designs created in his Chicago studio. Starting in the 1930s, he collaborated with Bemelmans creating advertisement posters and other art-related projects. Prior to this letter being offered for sale, nobody ever questioned whether or not Bemelmans illustrated "Madeline in London." It is now evident that he did not.
