Description: 3 pages, 12.5 x 7.5 inches, Mechanicsburg, April 23, 1840. Outstanding autographed letter signed "Phebe Sergeant," who has moved from Michigan to Ohio in a quest to better his life, only to suffer one misfortune after another, in small part: "...We all lay sick most of the time with the fever...Susan Marie was born Sept. 26, 1838 and she died the 28th of September, 1839. What was the matter with her we don't know. She dwindled away until she was nothing but skin and bones. Having to part with one baby and now binding out the two oldest, Elizabeth and George. The reason we rent out any of our children is that being sick so much we could not get along with so many to provide for them. Elizabeth's time to serve is seven years. George's time is thirteen years. George when free will have a horse, saddle and bridle worth sixty dollars and twenty-five dollars in cash%u2026plus two new suits of clothes - one of common wear and one of broad cloth. He is to be educated in figures to the rule of three. Elizabeth is to have a bed and bedding and a new milk cow and suitable clothes for a girl at age 18%u2026and a new bible...I am this year cropping it on shares on a fifty acre lot that belongs to a Warren freeman. I am to do the work and have one third of everything...There is a genuine cry among the people of Ohio of hard times on account of there being no money in circulation...therefore the general cry is to elect General Harrison as Governor and chase out Van Burien thinking..." Small hole the size of a quarter at the top of page 1, with the missing piece still attached to the remnants of the wax seal. Several smudges; quite delicate overall. Very good(-) condition.

I have just received the copy of Mysterious Island by Jules Verne which I ordered previously. The book arrived in the condition in which it was sent and I am very impressed with the condition of the book. I would like to thank the staff for all of their assistance and will certainly order again! Billy Dinwoodie, Johannesburg South Africa
