Description: 1 page on "National Federation of Music" letterhead, 11 x 8.5 inches, Beloit, Wisconsin, April 5, 1958, responding to a publication which has asked for a few comments on the American National Anthem, in small part: "In my opinion The Star Spangled Banner is not a particularly good song but adequate for its purpose...Irving Berlin's God Bless America is certainly much easier to sing, and it appeals to the average taste...America, the Beautiful is a far better song in both words and music, but a little highbrow in its appeal. America is a very practical song for all occasions, but suffers from the duplication of the tune in many other anthems, including the British...The Star Spangled Banner itself was not officially recognized until 1931, although it had been sung since 1814...The melody of the National Anthem is handicapped by having too great a range for the average voice and to some extent by being in triple time instead of a march...I do not agree with critics of the words in general, except for the second and third stanzas which are silly..." This is one of the best Spaeth letters ever to come to market. Stapled to a one-page bio of Spaeth from a 1956 magazine. Very good condition.

Comments: American musicologist who traced the sources and origins of popular songs to their folk and classical roots.
