Description: Map. Color lithograph. Image measures 24 x 34".

Comments: This map of Jersey City centers on the area of Journal Square, showing the railroad and surroundings streets. Published in 1927, the map is an example of a real estate or plat map, which shows the divisions of land with regards to infrastructure and property. Streets are clearly labeled with names, numbers, and scale information. Between the streets, plots of land are labeled by their number, with significant landmarks such as banks, theaters, churches and so on named specifically. Within this wealth of information, the diagonal green line of the Pennsylvania Railroad stands out as a graphic element cutting through a sea of orange, pink, and yellow. Attention has even been paid to the individual forks of the railroad as it comes into the various platform at the station. The map appeared in G.M. Hopkins & Co.'s "New Jersey State Atlas." It is in good overall condition. Image extends to the edges of the sheet on all sides. Minor tears and chips along outside edges. G.M. Hopkins & Co. was a Philadelphia-based publishing firm. Between 1870 and 1940, the company produced over 175 atlases and real estate plat maps of cities, counties, and townships in 18 different states and the District of Columbia. Today, their maps offer a detailed insight into the ways many cities have--and haven't--changed in the course of the last century.
