Comments: This scarce map of China is from Sir George Leonard Staunton's account of the first English mission to China, conducted in 1792-1794 under the British Ambassador Earl George Macartney. It elegantly describes the embassy's travel from Hangzhou to Canton in fantastic detail, with nearly every part of the journey accompanied by a note describing terrain, wildlife, population, transportation, and other information. The map appeared in Staunton's account of the journey, entitled "Authentic Account of an Embassy from the King of Great Britain to the Emperor of China." The map is in excellent condition with full margins as issued.Bright paper with minor discoloration. Sir George Leonard Staunton (1737--1801) was a member of the East India Society who served as Secretary to the British mission to the Chinese Imperial court. He was responsible for producing an official count of the mission, in which he combined the papers of his superiors with well-chosen illustrations. As the first accurate maps of the coast and interior of the Chinese Empire, Staunton's maps became invaluable resources for cartographers working on the region. This map is a fine example of his work.
