Comments: This map of Fairfield County, Connecticut shows the region's hilly topography, owing to the Catskill Mountains, in fine detail. It includes the towns between Sherman in the north (shown in an inset) and Easton in the south, with hand-colored divisions between each town. Significant roads, railroads, property, topographical features, buildings, and landmarks are all labeled. The county alone is depicted on the map, with its northernmost section extending just beyond the sheet's decorative border. The geographical areas beyond the county's boundaries are clearly labeled in minimalist capital letters: New Haven County, New York, and so on. A particularly charming element of the map is the Hosatonic River, its snaking line forming the northeast boundary of the county and separating the map from its title, printed in the upper right corner of the sheet. On the left side of the sheet is an inset map of the Town of Sherman and the North Part of New Fairfield. The map appeared as plates 98 and 99 in D.H. Hurd and Co.'s "Town and city atlas of the state of Connecticut." The map is a clear impression on bright paper. Overall wear to margins and center seam. D.H. Hurd & Co. published only two atlases: one of New Hampshire and one of Connecticut. Yet their volumes are distinctive for their attention to detail, with each state divided into small regions that display a wealth of information related to property, topography, and infrastructure. This map of the northern part of Fairfield County exemplifies the publishing firm's scarce work.
