Comments: This rare map of the Holy Land shows the areas of ancient Syria and Lebanon along the Mediterranean Sea, as well as the island of Cyprus. Published in 1713, it is elaborately decorated with pictorial mountains, forests, and cities, as well as decorative ships and sea creatures in the water. A title cartouche set on waves is topped with scrollwork and a shell. Originally drawn by Giuseppe Rosaccio for his 1598 "Viaggio da Venetia a Constantinopoli," this edition of the map appeared in Lasor a Varea's "Universus terrarum orbis scriptorum," a geographical dictionary that combined the work of many prominent Italian cartographers. The map is in good condition with minor overall wear and staining. Alphonsus Lasor a Vera was the cartographic alias of Raffaello Savonarola (1680--1748), a monk who worked in the monastery library in Padua. His 2-volume "Universus Terrarum Orbis Scriptorum" contained 252 maps, an extensive glossary of terms, and an overall wealth of practical information about the geography and cartography of the time. This fine map of the Holy Land, as it is accompanied by its surrounding text, demonstrates the scale of his project.
