Comments: Satirical criticism of the Royal Society and its Philosophical Transactions, by the London apothecary and physician, "well known for his various literary entanglements and voluminous publications in science". A versatile man of unscrupulous character, with considerable abilities and unlimited impudence, Hill published works on botany, zoology, mineralogy and medicine, making some important contributions to science. He was the first, for example, to introduce the classification system of Linnaeus to England. "Hill's scientific labors were colored by his frequent satirical attacks on his contemporaries...; denied membership in the Royal Society of London, he attacked that body in volumes such as his biting Review of the Works of the Royal Society". DSB VI 400-01. "This once well-known work is...the greatest compliment the Royal Society ever received... Hill's book is droll and cutting satire". Sotheran II, 1921, p.468. Lowndes 1070. Blake 211. DNB IX 848.
