Comments: This scarce map by Anna Beek depicts the Battle of Wijnendale, which occurred in Flanders in 1708 as part of the War of Spanish Succession in 1708. The battle was an important event leading up the Siege of Lille, as it enabled a convoy of supplies for the Allies (British and Dutch) to reach its destination. Set in a green countryside, the plan lays out the battle in accordance to an explanatory key in the lower right corner. A banner bearing the map's title flutters above the scene. Below the map, in a broadside format, substantial text is printed in French and Dutch that recounts the battle in greater detail. The map was published in 1708, not long after the battle itself took place. It is in excellent condition with no chips or tears. Minor offsetting. Anna Beek was a late-17th century publisher and engraver of maps based in the Hague. Her detailed maps and battle plans are often found in composite atlases and have become highly valued due to their quality and scarcity.Language: English
