Environs of Paris
Publisher: Henry Teesdale & Co.
Date Published: 1863
Description: Map on 4 sheets. Lithograph. Image measures 16 x 13".
Comments: This finely-engraved map of Paris and its vicinity forms a 32-inch oval spread over 4 separate sheets. Each sheet has its own large inset: St. Germain en Laye and its Environs (North-West); The Environs of Saint Cloud (North-East); The Environs of Versailles (South-West); and the Environs of Fontainebleau (South-East). As the map was produced in 1860, its high level of detail illustrates how railroads were affecting the city's expansion. The map appeared in the "Dispatch Atlas," a collection of about 250 maps that had been previously published in the British newspaper Weekly Dispatch between 1856 and 1862. All sheets have general wear at the edges including minor chips and tears, not affecting the image. John Dower was a 19th-century British mapmaker and publisher who succeeded his father and produced work for a wide range of publications. Those maps published in the Weekly Dispatch Atlas, such as this beautiful map of Paris, are some of his best works.Language: English
