Comments: This original print by New York artist Clara Tice depicts a group of four setters, a general breed of hunting dog. Made circa 1921, the image shows a mother dog looking to the left, her tail pointed with alertness. Three puppies play beneath her, one paying at her abdomen and the others running gleefully between her legs. Tice has depicted the various spots of the dogs' fur with a mix of precision and spontaneity that complements the dynamic lines composing their bodies. The print was likely made in concert with Tice's 1921 book "ABC Dogs," a collection of a similarly-styled canine images accompanied by poetically staccato text. It is in excellent condition with no chips or tears. Textured edges from original thick paper. Clara Tice (1888-1973) was an American illustrator and artist who lived in Greenwich Village during a time of avant-garde artistic activity. Although somewhat well-known for her erotic drawings and prints of nudes, as well as her bohemian lifestyle, she remains relatively obscure within art history more generally. These images of dogs from later in her life speak to her personal passion for animals. Her book "ABC Dogs" was likely inspired by the many dogs she owned and cared for throughout her lifetime. This delightful print provides insight into the artist's personality and stirs the heart of its viewer at the same time.
