Description: Interesting autographed document signed, 12mo, 1 page, measuring 4" x 2", Philadelphia, April 7, 1836, a draft authorizing the payment of two francs to French politician Francois Barbe-Marbois. (Marbois is best known as the representative of Napoleon Bonaparte who negotiated the Louisiana Purchase treaty with the United States in 1803. He was rewarded by the French Government with a gift of 152,000 francs. Du Ponceau, on the other hand, was nearly imprisoned for coming into conflict with Secretary of State James Madison. A Senate Committee reported in favor of directing President Jefferson in instituting legal proceedings but it was thought unwise to prosecute a person of Du Ponceau's legal, social, and political standing.) Fine condition.

Comments: French-born American linguist, prominent attorney, and philosopher who at age 16 came to America with General Baron von Steuben, serving as the latter's personal secretary, Aide-de-Camp, and live-in companion. In 1791 he became a member of the American Philosophical Society.

I have just received the copy of I, Robot Screenplay published by Easton Press and signed by Harlan Ellison which I ordered just after the middle of June 2003. The book arrived in the condition in which it was sent and I am glad that I ordered it from you. Will certainly order from Argosy Book Store again in future! - Billy Dinwoodie, Johannesburg South Africa
