Comments: This original print by New York artist Clara Tice depicts a family of Sealyham Terriers, a rare Welsh breed of dog. Made circa 1921, the image shows three puppies prancing playfully around their mother, two chasing a bright red ball that matches their colorful tongues. Tice has given great care to her rendering of this particular breed, quite possibly because she owned a Sealyham herself. A light brown wash gives the dogs tinted ears and patches around their eyes, a common coloring for this type of dog. Elegant minimal line work creates a feel for their silky coats while maintaining the brightness of their white fur. The print was likely made in concert with Tice's 1921 book "ABC Dogs," a collection of a similarly-styled canine images accompanied by poetically staccato text. It is in excellent condition with no chips or tears. Textured edges from original thick paper. Clara Tice (1888-1973) was an American illustrator and artist who lived in Greenwich Village during a time of avant-garde artistic activity. Although somewhat well-known for her erotic drawings and prints of nudes, as well as her bohemian lifestyle, she remains relatively obscure within art history more generally. These images of dogs from later in her life speak to her personal passion for animals. Her book "ABC Dogs" was likely inspired by the many dogs she owned and cared for throughout her lifetime. This delightful print provides insight into the artist's personality and stirs the heart of its viewer at the same time.
