Description: Map. Uncolored lithograph. Image measures 15.25 x 25.25".

Comments: This map of Stony Brook shows the Suffolk County hamlet at the time of its early development. Included on the map are property lines, railroads and trolleys, buildings, and the names of landowners. As this map was originally intended for use by the fire insurance industry, the key also designates the material of buildings--stucco, wood frame, brick, and so on--as well as the locations of fire departments, hydrants, and water mains. In addition, there is a small compass rose that complements both the graphic quality of the rendering and the decorative border. This plate appeared in Hyde's "Atlas of a Part of Suffolk County, Long Island, New York." It is a dark impression on bright paper and in excellent condition. Small tears to margins not affecting the image. The publishing house of E. Belcher Hyde created maps primarily for the fire insurance industry beginning in the 1890s. While much of their work was concentrated in urban areas such as metropolitan New York, the company also mapped the growing developments on nearby Long Island. Today, these maps are valued as research tools because of their detail and accuracy. As such, they offer fascinating insight into the history of this now densely-populated area. Left in its original uncolored state, this map is a beautiful complement to any collection or decor.

Hello. I ordered a book from you via Abebooks a short while ago; it arrived today. Since one cannot leave feedback there, I wanted to send you a note to thank you for packaging the book so carefully! I know the item wasn't very expensive, but it was a gift for my mother, who was quite thrilled to receive it. Thank you very much for taking the time to be so thorough. Best regards - E. Bell
