Comments: This large-scale map of the thirteen British colonies was originally made at the outset of the American Revolution. The names of the colonies are laid out in the map's title, which is written within a lovely title cartouche topped with an illuminated coat of arms. Intended for a French audience, the map offers an appropriately Francophone perspective, limiting the claims of the British to the regions east of the Appalachian Mountains. In addition, it has excellent detail in the areas under French control in Canada and around the Great Lakes. Many Indian names and bodies of water are labeled. The map is in good condition with several folds as issued. Matthaus Albrecht Lotter (1741-1810) succeeded his father in his successful map-making business. This map is one of his prized productions.
