Patriarchatus Hierosolymitani Geographica descriptio
Date Published: 1640
Description: Map. Copperplate engraving with original hand outline coloring. Image measures 13.75 x 19.75". Sheet measures 17.5 x 23".
Comments: This map of the Holy Land extends from Egypt to Lebanon, showing the extent of the Patriarchate of Jerusalem in Roman times. It is rendered in the sophisticated style of French cartography in the 17th century, with decoration reduced to a minimum. Of particular note in the historic city of Petra, famous for its rock-cut architecture and water conduit system. Cities and forts are labeled, often with pictograms, and mountains are depicted pictorially. The Mediterranean Sea is filled with a large strapwork title cartouche. The map was published in "Tables de la Geographie Ancienne et Nouveli." It is in excellent condition with wide margins and no tears. Small chip to lower left corner not affecting the image. Minor offsetting throughout. Melchior Tavernier (1594-1665) was a French mapmaker who worked in his family's publishing business.Language: English
