Description: Illustrated with some woodcut initials; large woodcut of English royal arms on title, repeated on final recto. [24], 553 pages. Short thick 4to, bound in elaborate 16th Century Bohemian calf over beveled wooden boards, front panel lettered ASERCIONIS: LUTE (above) & CONFUTACIO (below), copiously blind-stamped with borders of vases, bells, hearts and florals around a central medallion of Virgin with Child. In good condition, generally quite clean but with showings its age (corner of title gone with small loss of lettering; first quire still sewn but quite loose; leather very worn at edges with spine defective; leather ties anciently renewed). Coloniae: Petri Quentel, 1525.

Comments: The most important refutation of Luther's reformed doctrine by an Englishman, this was written by the Bishop of Rochester to quash rumblings of Lutheran sympathy at Cambridge in 1524. It immediately went through several Continental editions - mostly in Protestant Germany. Especially interesting, this copy was bound in central Europe around the middle of the century and bears gift and ownership inscriptions from the 1590s: Paulus Parminondas Abbas Slovanensis and Johann Kyrchperger of Prague. -- Shaaber, Check List F50; Pegg 1517.
