Dossier of Proof Plates from "Les Civilises"; The Civilized
36 color and 34 black & white lithographs. Unbound. Sheets range between 11'' x 9.5'' and 13''x 9.5". Edge-worn dossier with edges of lithographs slightly sunned, still in good condition.
These 70 proof plates from artist Henry Le Riche (1868-1944) are meant to accompany a limited edition version of Claude Ferrere's (1876-1957) "Les Civilises," which won the Goncourt Price in 1905. Featuring multiple states of many of the illustrations, this dossier provides an in-depth and unique look into the artist's process as well as turn-of-the-century Indochina. Intricate lines combine with a muted yet varied color palate to portray the many scenes described in the book, including Hanoi, Singapore, brothels, opium dens, and harbor towns. Henry le Rich was a French painter, sculptor, illustrator and designer who taught engraving at the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris.
