Description: 13 leaves with poems and text illustrated with color lithographs, printed on heavy boards and hinged with linen. 4to, original cloth-backed pictorial red boards; spine re-backed with plain cloth. London & New York: E.P. Dutton & Co., (no date, circa 1902). A good only copy of this very charming and uncommon book; pages are intact but with wear at corners; some mild toning at margins and two plates have very faint ghosting from erased pencil; two leaves are affixed with old tape, one on the image itself.

Comments: This charming children's book tells of the adventures of the Tin Tans: kitchen utensils who come alive when their human owners aren't around. Candlesticks, kettles, teacups, clocks, and more each get their own rhyming stories, all of which are lovingly illustrated with comic scenes. The book, originally printed in Bavaria, even includes the music for the Tin Tan Band for children to play along to. Other Tin Tans, however, are more mischievous, and some of the stories at the end take a more sinister turn, as was common in turn-of-the-century children's books. The title page features childhood photos of the authors framed in decorative roundels.

I flew to NY from CA a couple of weeks ago, and while walking 59th, happened upon Argosy... Amazing! I had very little wiggle room in my time between meetings, but I made sure I came back the next morning, also. I'm so impressed, and reading about the family history of the store impressed me even more. Thank you for having such a marvelous bastion of knowledge there in the city! I was truly impressed. - Wil S.
